Yesterday was a struggle - over 12 miles. The first 6 were beautiful coming down off Springer. Nice easy decent through beautiful rhododendrons along a scenic mountain creek. Then beside an incredible waterfall.
The next 6 - not so fun. Steep climbs over roots and rocks ( not my kind of R&R). I limped into camp with a buddy at 6:30. I left at 8:00 that morning.
Slept like a baby after a horrible night on Springer Mountain. 15 degrees in a howling wind.
Today was more mild but still tiring. Only 6 miles but it hit 70 degrees and we were exposed to the sun most of the day.
There has been a norovirus outbreak along the GA section of the trail. We came upon a poor hiker who had been sick and laid up in a shelter for two days. He was white
as a ghost and had to be carried out by rescue volunteers. If you've ever had NV you can understand why. Thank God for the rescuers and other volunteers along the trail.
Wow! An outbreak on the trail and 15 degree weather. Almost sounds like a novel. Stay safe and keep writing! These posts are awesome to read. Beautiful pictures too. Nice going.
Norovirus hits just about every year in the early part of the trail. 2018 I avoided the shelters till the Smokies. From an aussie vet enjoy the trail, it gets easier every day.
Praying that you stay healthy!! God’s beauty and grace will keep you strong!! Much love!
Noravirus is no joke- cannot imagine suffering through that on the trail. Beautiful waterfall- I am sure it is one of many of God’s creations that will speak to you along this journey. We love and miss you!!!
